Bhutan, the Land of the Thunder Dragon

Bhutan, officially the Kingdom of Bhutan, is a landlocked state in South Asia at the eastern edge of the Himalayas. Bhutan shares borders with the People's Republic of China to the north, the Republic of India to the east, and the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal to the south, west, and Nepal. Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who created a distinct Bhutanese identity after escaping religious persecution in Tibet, united Bhutan in the 17th century when it had previously been a patchwork of feuding fiefdoms. Contact with the British Empire in the 20th century strengthened ties with India after independence. Bhutan, lauded as the happiest country in Asia by Business Week in 2006, boasts a diverse landscape ranging from subtropical plains to Himalayan heights exceeding 7,000 meters. With Vajrayana Buddhism as the state religion, a predominantly Buddhist population of 691,141, and a Hindu minority, the capital and largest city is Thimphu. In 2007, Bhutan transitioned from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy, holding its inaugural general election. A member of the United Nations and SAARC, Bhutan hosted the sixteenth SAARC summit in 2010, with a total reported area of 38,394 square kilometers since 2002, differing from the prior 1997 estimation of approximately 46,500 km2.
