tsetang monasteryTsetang (3200m) is one of Tibet's largest cities, which is located southeast of Lhasa 183 km and 87km from Gonggar airport. It is the capital of Shannan (Lokha). Starting your trip of Tibet from here also helps a bit in acclimatization, as it is slightly lower in elevation then Lhasa. Tsetang itself is not very interesting to see ut it is the gateway to visiting Yarlung, Chongye and Samye valleys. The areas around Tsetang is regarded as the cradle of Tibetan civilization in that Gongpori caves above the town are said to be the place from where Tibetan race originated. You will be exploring the Yarlung valley area which is the cradle of Tibetan civilization. This area has the oldest building in Tibet, Yumbu Lagang, the oldest monastery Samye and has the birthplace of the six original Tibetan clans, the Monkey Cave on Mount Zodang Gongpor. Samye Monastery is the first monastery ever built in the 8th Century. The monastery is situated 30km from Tsedang. The monastery was designed and created in the shape of the universe from a Buddhist viewpoint and the architecture consists of three distinct styles, namely, the Han, the Tibetan and the Indian. The monastery was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt three hundred years later to serve as the residence of the 6th Dalai Lama.
