Trekking to upper Dolpo is great experience and not forgotten. This trekking is the natural embodiment high passes, rare flora and fauna and sweeping vistas. With more than 130 monasteries in the area the route passes through a predominantly Buddhist area. The famous Shey-Gompa of Peter Manthiessen’s The Leopard fame also falls in this region. There are Gompa or monastery in every settlement with some of the oldest monasteries in the Himalayan region of Saldang, Dho, Chharka and Bhijer. Some of these Gompas are more than 700 years old. On the villages en route Dolpo Heritage circuit the co-existence and harmony of both Hindu and Buddhist religious practices form an intrinsic part of the daily life of the people.
